Algebra I: Points on a Line

by Texas Instruments

Objectives

  • Students will recognize that the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change is constant between any two distinct points on a line.
  • Students will recognize that different lines can have the same or different ratios of vertical change to horizontal change.

Vocabulary

  • Coordinates of a point
  • Horizontal change
  • Quadrants
  • Slope of a line
  • Vertical change

About the Lesson

This lesson involves developing student understanding of slope of a line. The activity is based on examining the vertical change and horizontal change when moving between two points on a line. As a result, students will:

  • Move points and observe the vertical and horizontal distance between the points.
  • Determine that the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change remains constant.
