Transformation Graphing App - Introduction To

The Transformation Graphing App enhances the c function mode and lets you observe the effects of changing coefficient values without leaving the graph screen. The Transformation Graphing App is accessed by selecting the Transformation Graphing App icon .

Graph transformations of a function

The Transformation Graphing App allows you to manipulate up to four coefficients (A, B, C, and D only) on the graph. You step through the transformation of a function or animate the transformation using play styles, play/pause, play and fast play. You can enter functions directly into Y1 or Y2 or use the equation templates to paste functions such as:

AX + B

AX2 + B

A(X-B)2 + C

A(X-B)(X-C)

AX2 + BX + C

A(X-B)3 + C

AX3 + BX2 + CX + D

A abs(B(X-C)) + D

A sin(B(X-C)) + D

A cos(B(X-C)) + D

A tan(B(X-C)) + D

Use A-D only in Y1 or Y2 for transformations.

1.   Press = on Y1 or Y2 when empty to show the transformations templates.

2.   Press h.
Note: Graphs in Y3-Y0 that include A-D, Y1 or Y2 in their definition will be turned off. The coefficients in Y1 and Y2 will be shown at the bottom of the screen with their values.

3.   Press the right and left arrow keys to select a template then press = to insert the template.

4.   Press left arrow key and right arrow key to change the value of the active coefficient, and up arrow key and down arrow key moves between the coefficients.

Using the Coefficients A, B, C, and D to do custom functions

1.   To make a custom function, in Y1 type your function using only A-D as coefficients.
Example:
Y1=A*sqrt(B(x-C))+D

2.   Press h.

3.   The coefficients in Y1 will be shown at the bottom of the screen with their current values.

4.   The active coefficient can be changed using the right arrow key and the left arrow key .

5.   Up arrow key and down arrow key arrow key changes among the coefficients A-D.

Change the Transformation Graphing Settings
Menus and Functions

  • The Transformation Graphing App is best used for animation graphing investigations. The window variable Xres is set to 3 when the app launches.
  • Note: When Xres is set to 3, this means the graph calculates a value for every 3rd pixel. This may result in "choppy" looking graphs. Xres may be set to 1 for finer resolution graphs by pressing [window] and changing the value for Xres.
  • Note: Xres must be set to 1 for Points of Interest Trace to work on the functions.
  • Once functions are in Y1 or Y2 that include coefficients A-D, the options menu on the c editor will have SETUP active. The SETUP wizard is available from either the options menu or from the softkey SETUP on the graph screen.
  • Change the animation setting from Play Pause to slow animate or fast animate by selecting the Type.
  • Change the step size and starting value for each coefficient in the SETUP menu. Then press graph to see the graphs.
  • This plots every third graphing pixel and provides the best experience when using animations for Y1 and/or Y2. While Xres can be set to 1 in general, your graphing experience with animations will be optimal with the Xres set to 3.
  • To quit the Transformation Graphing App, select the icon  from the Home Screen and select QUIT from the dialog.
  • Transformation Graphing App Transformation Graphing App, Inequality Graphing App and Lines and Conics App cannot run at the same time since they enhance the Function mode of the editor. The active app shows a red circle on the home screen. To switch among apps, just select the icon of the desired app. If the Apps are in conflict, follow the prompts to quit the conflicting App, which will allow the other App to run as an enhanced o editor.
