Solution 40446:Troubleshooting a TI-84 Plus CE Graphing Calculator That Does Not Load Past a “Validating Operating System…” Message.

What can I do if my TI-84 Plus CE stops at or loops to a “Validating Operating System…” message?

To troubleshoot a TI-84 Plus CE calculator that does not load past the “Validating Operating System…” message, please try the troubleshooting steps below:

If the display is visible but appears locked up:

1) Using a paper clip, press the RESET button on the back for 2 seconds and release.

Please Note: Resetting the calculator will erase the contents of RAM, such as lists and programs.

2) If the calculator turns on when the ON key is pressed, use TI Connect CE to transfer the Operating System to your calculator. If you have access to another TI-84 Plus CE calculator, you may transfer the Operating System from calculator to calculator. However, please ensure the OS on the calculator you are transferring from is version 5.0.1 or later.

If the display is not visible:

1) Plug the calculator into a power outlet using the AC Power Adapter that came with the calculator for at least 10 minutes, or plug the calculator directly into a computer using the USB cable that came with the calculator for at least 10 minutes, or slide the calculator into a slot on a TI-84 Plus CE Charging Station for at least 10 minutes.
2) After 10 minutes use a paper clip to press the RESET button on the back of the calculator for 2 seconds and release.

Please Note: Resetting the calculator will erase the contents of RAM, such as lists and programs.

3) Press the ON Key.
4) If the calculator turns on when the ON key is pressed, use TI Connect CE to transfer the Operating System to your calculator. If you have access to another TI-84 Plus CE calculator, you may transfer the Operating System from calculator to calculator. However, please ensure the OS on the calculator you are transferring from is version 5.0.1 or later.

If the calculator does not turn on after you press the ON key, please do the following:

1) While holding the [2nd] [Del] keys down, press and release the RESET button on the back of the calculator. When the screen turns on, release the [2nd] and [Del] keys.

Please Note: If the handheld shuts down while transferring the OS please hold the [2nd] [Del] keys down, press and release the RESET button on the back of the calculator. When the screen turns on, release the [2nd] and [Del] keys.

If you have access to another TI-84 Plus CE battery, please try using that battery temporarily for testing purposes, and note the calculator’s response and functionality when using this battery.

Once all troubleshooting steps are complete, charge the calculator for 1-2 hours.
