NCTM’s “Catalyzing Change” calls for increased attention to mathematical modeling as a means to helping students see and appreciate mathematics as a tool for understanding the world and for solving real-world and authentic problems. We will discuss some recently developed activities that harness TI technology (both TI-84 Plus CE and TI-Nspire™ CX families of graphing calculators) for students and teachers to experience firsthand the power of modeling in addressing questions related to climate change, disease spread, allocation of resources for disaster relief, and optimizing game strategy.
