Planning a Better Math Unit Using TI Technology

Technology: TI-Nspire™ CX II graphing calculator,
TI-Nspire™ CX Navigator™ System,
CBR™ 2 motion sensor
Capacity: 60

Saturday
9:30 – 10:50 a.m. | Level Three, Dallas Ballroom G

In this session, we will share new math units created for precalculus classes. We will show how to combine minimal lecture with engaging hands-on activities in hopes of placing the responsibility of comprehending the material largely on the students’ shoulders and not spoon-feeding them the information. Each unit created contains a review assignment of prior knowledge, some guided notes, tips and tricks with the TI-Nspire™ CX II graphing calculator, real-world situation problems that include the elements of the unit, a lesson of coding on the TI-Nspire™ handheld, a data-collection activity using simple plug-and-play sensors associated with the unit, and a culminating assessment activity where it’s all put together. Participants will leave with sample units and, hopefully, the inspiration to try something like this in their own classrooms.
