Trademarks and acknowledgements

Trademarks: TM symbols

A trademark is a proper adjective followed by a generic noun or phrase that describes the products or services sold under the trademark. Use the ™ symbol on every reference to indicate that a company (like TI) claims exclusive trademark rights to a word, words or logo:

  • TI-Nspire™ CX CAS graphing calculator
  • TI-Nspire™ Navigator™ NC Teacher Software
  • Teachers Teaching with Technology™ (T3™) conference
  • T3™ professional development

Trademarks: the noun “technology”

The word “technology” is acceptable as the noun after a TI trademark, but use a more descriptive generic noun at least once in the communication — preferably on first reference — because a trademark is protected only when used on or with a product or service:

  • TI-Nspire™ technology enables students to visualize critical math and science concepts. The technology comprises graphing calculators, apps for iPad®, software and classroom learning systems that support teaching and learning strategies for deeper understanding.

Trademarks: ™ (or trademark) symbol

The ™ symbol (PC: Alt + 0153; Mac: Option + 2) is used on every reference to indicate that TI claims exclusive trademark rights to a word, words or logo.

Trademarks: ® (or registered trademark) symbol

Six TI trademarked products use the ® symbol (PC: Alt + 0174; Mac: Option + G), for reasons related to their intended market or because they are products gained through acquisitions:

  • DLP® chip
  • DLP Cinema® chip technology
  • Stellaris® hardware
  • WEBENCH®
  • Simple Switcher®
  • Powerwise®

All other TI trademarks take a ™ symbol.

Trademarks: third-party

TI can normally use the trademarks of other companies to identify or indicate the source of their products with or without the ™ or ® symbol. However, it’s best to attribute ownership of other companies’ marks in a footnote or other reference. Use the Glossary of Terms to find known disclaimers. If none listed, use the generic ones below.

Third-party trademark belonging to one owner:

  • (Product name) is a (registered) trademark of its owner.

Multiple third-party trademarks belonging to multiple owners:

  • (Product name), (Product name) and (Product name) are (registered) trademarks of their respective owners.

OR

  • All (registered) trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

Third-party trademarks being used/endorsed by author (in a blog, for example), but not endorsed by TI:

  • All (registered) trademarks are the property of their respective owners and are not affiliated with, nor endorsed by Texas Instruments.

When mentioning several testing disclaimers, see Testing Statements on how to combine them.

Trademarks: licensing arrangements

Sometimes licensing arrangements with a trademark’s owner stipulate how TI must use that trademark. In the case of Vernier Science Education™ products, for instance, TI must use the ® symbol on first reference.

Information about usage by licensees is generally available on the trademark owner’s website.
