Activity Overview

Students explore the use of nonstandard units of volume and calculators to estimate the number of peas it would take to fill a classroom.

Objectives

Students will explore the following concepts in this activity:

  • whole numbers
  • ratios
  • multiplication
  • proportion
  • capacity measure

About the Lesson

To introduce the activity, read Counting on Frank to the students. Discuss the different examples of measurement in the story. Distribute the student activity sheet to students.

Divide the class into small groups of students. Ask students to suggest ways to determine the number of peas that artist drew in the illustration. Next, challenge students to develop a method to find out the number of peas it would take to fill the classroom.
