Perimeter Patterns
Students investigate patterns in ordered pairs generated by constructing a sequence of similar shapes. They then use the patterns and the calculator to predict the perimeter of a specific shape in the sequence.
Students will explore the following concepts in this activity:
- whole numbers
- addition
- estimation
- measuring perimeter
Distribute the student activity pages to the class. Have students use the green triangles from Pattern Blocks (or print/cut out the paper triangle provided at the end of this activity) to make a pattern of a larger triangle. Record the number of blocks it took to make the pattern and find the perimeter of the triangle. Use the calculator to predict the perimeter of the 95th triangle. Finally, have students choose a different Pattern Block and repeat the activity
