Relating Rates

Activity Overview

Students are given a situation of water draining out of a cylindrical tank in order to explain the process of solving related rates questions.

Key Steps

Step 1

In this activity, students are introduced to the topic of related rates. Students will work through a problem step-by-step to understand the process of solving problems involving related rates. Self-check open-response and multiple-choice questions help students build comprehension.

Step 2

A second example problem further explains the process. The steps are presented in an open-response self-check format. This example of two cars leaving is a typical Pythagorean problem that needs to be carefully differentiated implicitly so as not to forget the Chain Rule.

Step 3

Students will apply what was learned to various real-world and graphical problems.
