Zombie Apocalypse I: STEM of the Living Dead

Activity Overview

This engaging activity provides students with an inside look at the math and science real-life epidemiologists use to track and curb the spread of diseases through a population.

About the Lesson

Zombie Apocalypse I: STEM of the Living Dead — the original activity that launched the engaging STEM Behind Hollywood series and spread through classrooms like a virus — has jumped species and is now available for both the TI‑Nspire™ CX series and the TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator. Download the zip files below for your calculator of choice.

This activity provides students with an inside look at the math and science real-life epidemiologists use to track and curb the spread of diseases through a population, and engages them in:

  • Graphing geometric progression and an S curve, interpreting data, and making predictions
  • Understanding the function of various parts of the human brain
  • Investigating and discussing factors dealing with immunity and vaccines

Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Steven Schlozman, who is also a consultant with the National Academy of Sciences' Science & Entertainment Exchange, helped Texas Instruments (TI) develop Zombie Apocalypse I and its sequel, Zombie Apocalypse II: The Humans Strike Back.

*TI knows of no scientifically valid evidence that supports claims for the existence of zombies or for any virus that can reanimate dead people.
