  • Book: 12 Ways to Get to 11
  • Grid Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or Paste
  • Crayons or markers
  • Color tiles or connecting cubes
  • 5" x 8" index cards or tag board (at least 7 per student)
  • Yarn or string
  • Overhead tiles

Let Me Count the Ways

Activity Overview

Students will make predictions about the number of ways to make eleven with two or more addends. They will investigate patterns with these addends with the help of manipulatives and the calculator.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 109 - 115 from the attached PDF file for your class

    • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
    Activity A:

  • Use cubes or tiles to represent ways to make eleven (use more than two addends)


    • Activity B:
  • Using only two colors of tiles make a train that represents the number 5
  • View all combinations for five that can be made with two colors


    • Activity C:
  • Draw a large T on the board and label the sides of the table with the colors being used
  • Fill the table with all the combinations for five made with two colors
  • Use the one inch grid paper, two colors of markers to create a stair step pattern for the number 5


    • Activity D:
  • Write different number sentences for 5
  • Use the calculator to show a number sentence
  • Cut out each grid row from the T-table and glue on separate index cards
  • Write the number sentence on the card
  • Create a flip book
  • Use the calculator to explore all the two addend number sentences for 5

    • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
