Fractions as Division

Activity Overview

In this activity students explore the division of two whole numbers by a fraction. It is important for students to recognize that this concept shows two different ways to think about the same fraction.

About the Lesson

In this TI-Nspire™ lesson students explore the division of two whole numbers by a fraction (i.e., bc-ax-7-4 can be thought of as 7 copies of bc-ax06-1-4 and as 7 whole units divided into 4 parts). It is important for students to recognize that this concept shows two different ways to think about the same fraction. This understanding is an important precursor to successfully working with mixed numbers. Once students can see the connection between fractions and division they will understand that bc-ax-5-3 is one third of 5, which leads to the meaning of multiplication by a unit fraction.

Students should be familiar with the terms unit fraction, equivalent fraction, common denominator, and improper fraction covered in earlier activities

This is Lesson 8 out of 15 in the Building Concepts in Mathematics: Fractions Series.
