Cereal Numbers

Activity Overview

Students build numbers from zero to ten with cereal and connect the number name and numeral. Students also explore number sentences for numbers up to ten.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 7 - 16 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
    Activity A:

  • Read The Cheerios Counting Book to students and show them the illustrations


  • Activity B:
  • Students count and make connections to number names


  • Activity C:
  • Use the TI-10 as an electronic number flip book and learn to count from 0 to 10


  • Activity D:
  • With the help of number cards and projector, teach students to make number sentences in varying arrangements with Cheerios


  • Activity E:
  • Place one arrangement of 5 Cheerios on the overhead projector, and ask students to use their TI-10 to explore other number sentences that make five
  • Provide the opportunity for students to explore other arrangements and corresponding number sentences with their cereal and TI-10s for numbers 0 to 10
  • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
