Basketballs in the Hoops: Linear Equations and Inequalities Game

Activity Overview

Lead students in a review of linear equations and inequalities with a fun, interactive game of math and hoops.

About the Lesson

This low-prep activity goes beyond drills — it’s a winning strategy that gets every student engaged and having fun reviewing linear equations and inequalities with their TI-Nspire™ CX II graphing calculators. Just be ready to see a bit of their competitive side come out!

Created by DeJaune (@beyondthemath), a teacher with 10+ years of experience teaching Algebra 1 and geometry, this activity is great for reviewing essential skills at the end of a unit or for end-of-year exam prep.

How the game works:

  • Students work in groups to solve 8 different challenges (24 questions in total).
  • If the challenge questions are correct, the group gets to take a shot by choosing a hoop to move their basketball to.
  • Number of correct challenges = number of basketballs in the hoop.
  • At the end of class, reveal how many points each hoop is worth. The team with the most points wins!

Challenge questions:

  • A: Identify key features (x and y-intercepts)
  • B: Writing linear equations from a graph
  • C: Convert from point slope form to slope intercept form
  • D: Convert from standard form to slope intercept form
  • E: Writing linear equations from two points in point slope form
  • F: Writing linear equations from a table in slope intercept form
  • G-H: Graphing linear inequalities

This activity is part of the Calculated Collection, featuring easy-start activities made by teachers for today's differentiated classrooms.
