Vernier - A Good Cold Pack

Activity Overview

In this Vernier experiment, students will use a temperature probe to analyze the temperature change in a solution.

Objectives

  • Students will measure and analyze temperature changes during chemical reactions between solids and water.
  • Students will develop a plan to produce and test a chemical reaction that results in a significant temperature decrease.

Vocabulary

  • cold pack
  • chemical reaction
  • endothermic
  • exothermic
  • temperature
  • solution

About the Lesson

In this lesson, students will use a temperature probe to analyze the temperature change in a solution.

 As a result, students will:

  • Measure the temperature decrease when various solids are dissolved in water.
  • Analyze data to produce and test a chemical combination that would result in the best cold pack.
