Using the TI-83/84 to Explore the Binomial Theorem

Activity Overview

This lesson will introduce students to the binomial theorem through a variety of activities. Pascal's triangle and probabilities will be explored through problem solving. The binomial theorem, combinations formula, and the binomial probability function will also be explored. Students will discover how to use the TI-83/TI-84 calculator to find binomial and probability distributions and to create histograms.

Before the Activity

Before beginning this activity read the lesson plan and print copies of a template for Pascal's triangle, "Antonio's Pizza Problem", and "Do You Feel Lucky"?

During the Activity

Print and preview the calculator worksheet. Then complete the activity with your students.

After the Activity

Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
