Solution 26010: TI-Nspire™ Family or TI-SmartView™ Family Computer Software Fails to Connect to the Internet because of Windows Firewall.

Why does the TI-Nspire family or TI-SmartView family computer software not activate or get web updates over the internet?

If Windows Firewall or some other firewall software is turned on, it may be blocking communication between TI-Nspire family, TI-SmartView family computer software and the Texas Instruments server. When that happens, activation and web updates may not work.

To resolve this issue with the Windows Firewall:

• Click on “Start”, “Settings”, and choose “Control Panel” or click on "Start" and choose "Control Panel".
• Double-click on “Windows Firewall” icon.
• Check to see if the “On” radio button is selected.

• If Windows Firewall is On, make sure the “Don’t allow exceptions” checkbox is not selected.
• Click on the "Exceptions" tab.

• Click the “Add Program” button.
• Click the “Browse” button.
• Navigate to the following folder “C:\Program Files\TI Education\TI-Nspire”* and choose the “TI-Nspire.exe”* application.
* This specific path and file name depends on the application to be enabled. If the software was installed in a different folder, navigate to that folder instead. Please note older versions of TI-Nspire family computer software products may not have Activator.exe file.

• Click OK to save the Windows Firewall exceptions.

If another firewall application is being used such as ZoneAlarm, Norton 360 or McAfee Total Protection, they may not allow the TI-Nspire family or TI-SmartView family computer software to communicate with the TI Server. When that happens, activation and web updates may not work.

To resolve this issue:

• Please consult the software’s user manual to determine how to add a firewall exception for TCP ports 80 and 443.
• Make sure firewall exceptions are added for both of the following files by navigating to the following folder: “C:\Program Files\TI Education\TI-Nspire”* and choose the “TI-Nspire.exe”* and “Activator.exe”* applications.
* This specific path and file name depends on the application to be enabled. If the software was installed in a different folder, navigate to that folder instead. Please note older versions of TI-Nspire family computer software products may not have Activator.exe file.

Please see the TI-Nspire family or TI-SmartView computer software guidebooks for additional information.
