Solution 28350: Implicit Partial Differentiation on the TI-Nspire™ CAS Products.

How do I perform implicit partial differentiation on the TI-Nspire products?

To perform implicit partial differentiation please use the impdif( command. The impdif ( command is only available on the TI-Nspire CAS products which incorporates Computer Algebra System (CAS). The syntax is as indicated below:

impDif(Equation, Var, dependVar[,Order]) Where the order defaults to 1. impdif( computes the implicit derivative for equations in which one variable is defined implicitly in terms of another.

For example, to solve x^2+y^2=100:

1) Press [home] [A].

2) Press [menu [4] [E].
3) Press [X] [x²] [+] [Y] [x²].
4) Press [=] [1] [0] [0].
5) Press [,] [X] [,] [Y].
6) Press [enter] to solve.

Please see the TI-Nspire CAS guidebooks for additional information.
