Activity Overview

In this activity, students will investigate modeling the motion of two people to find where they will meet and at what rate each was walking.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the one calculator to one CBR 2™ unit
  • Download the TI Connect™ software to analyze data on the computer
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 27 - 32 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Run the Ranger program
  • Collect data as two people walk toward each other and away from a wall
  • Observe the distance versus time graphs
  • Determine the slope and y-intercept for each line
  • Use the sign of the slope to identify the direction of motion
  • Find the velocity for each walker
  • Enter the two equations in the slope-intercept form in the calculator and graph them
  • Determine the point of intersection of the two lines
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Data Collection table and answer questions listed in it.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
