Are Your Bones Normal?

Activity Overview

Use the TI-Navigator™ to Investigate Mathematics in Forensic Science

Before the Activity

  • At the beginning of the activity, pair students and have them measure each others humerus bone (radius bone, femur bone, femur bone, or tibia bone).

  • Next have the students measure their heights.
  • During the Activity

Please follow attachment directions for the TI-Navigator to investigate mathematics in Forensic Science.

    After the Activity

  • Have students observe whether their measurement points are close to the female or male equation line. If not, why?

  • Compare the other bones: radius, femur, or tibia.

  • Then identify the bone length which gives the closest measure of their height.

  • How does the calculator LinReg equation differ for the given equations? Why?
