Teaching with Technology
Speakers: Peter Flynn and Shelley Cross
Level: All

Description:

Teaching with technology is not a skill set, it’s a mindset. Fasten your seatbelt as the presenters in this webinar take you on a visual journey through mathematics. The brain processes visual images up to 60,000 times faster than text. Engagement is 58% higher on Instagram compared to Facebook. Our brains are pre-wired to never forget a face. “I see what you mean”, it’s part of our vernacular. Powerful visuals increase engagement, are more memorable than text and can be used to improve student understanding of mathematical concepts. From Year 7 to Year 12, teachers can use TI-Nspire teacher software to help illustrate an enormous range of mathematical concepts using powerful visuals.

Statistics and Probability
Speakers: Peter Fox and Joanna Kyprianou
Level: Senior

Duration: 1 hour

Description:

Stone, Bronze, Iron, cement and silicon ages defined past centuries, the 21st century may well be defined as the Data age. Statisticians are now called Data Scientists, not surprisingly when 90% of the world’s data has been collected in the past two years. Probability and statistics are not the same thing, they are related, but much more circuitously than algebra and calculus. The sample mean is a statistic, the population mean is not. Statistics are based on observations, population parameters are philosophical abstractions often used to compute the plausibility of a future event. Statistics like the sample mean however are often used to estimate population parameters; the fidelity of estimate depends on the number of observations used to compute the statistic. This webinar will use the TI-Nspire Teacher software to help unravel these two nucleotides that are shaping the growth and development of the 21st Century.

What can my Senior Mathematics students achieve in their transition week? Most schools have introduced a ‘transition week’, ‘step up program’, ‘early commencement’ or similar, to help retain students for a longer period of time at this late stage of the year . This is a major inconvenience for senior teachers as they try to mark exam papers, write reports and start getting courses ready. No time for reflection or to debrief on the positives and negatives of 2017, there are students waiting! To help relieve the pressure, we created a series of extended investigations that should keep your students engaged to the very end of the year. The resources are self- directed tasks so that students can work at their own pace leaving you free to … help them. By the way, we’ve even prepared the answers for you. Problems worth Exploring - Episode 3
Speakers: Jim Lowe and Peter Fox

In Episode 1 Goats were gobbling and cups were emptied and filled, in Episode 2 we weathered through some hail stones and consumed some pi. In this episode we will reach new altitudes providing students with the opportunity to explore with model cars and paper folding. Our model car problem involves minimising the time taken to travel a set distance where a ramp is used to generate the car’s speed. Can we reduce the time taken by changing the shape of the ramp? Our second problem starts with some simple paper folding that leads into a lovely linear graphs problem. So if you are looking for some great problems to get your student’s dendrites firing, join us for Problems worth Exploring – Episode 3.

Problems worth Coding
Speakers: Jim Lowe & Peter Fox
Level: All

In 1742 Christian Goldbach wrote a letter to Leonhard Euler which included the conjecture: “Every integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of three primes.” (At the time 1 was considered prime). Euler replied noting that “Every even integer can be written as the sum of two primes.” This delightful correspondence between these mathematicians has never been proven. With only minor changes the conjectures remain true without the necessity to use the number 1 as prime. Searching for prime numbers can be exhaustive and repetitive so it is an ideal candidate for coding and makes the problem accessible and worthy of exploration for students at a range of year levels with or without any prior coding experience. This and other interesting problems will be explored in this webinar: “Problems worth Coding”.

Curriculum Inspiration - Pythagoras is not Real
Speakers: Peter Flynn
Level: Senior

Don’t be alarmed, this is not the same situation as one of the fictional entities that visit your house annually to deposit chocolate eggs or place gift wrapped items under a tree. This story is about the retrospective beauty of mathematics. Pythagoras definitely existed (Approx 569 BC); but planes and imaginary numbers did not. The retrospective beauty of this activity is how complex numbers can be used to generate an infinite set of Pythagorean triples.

Extended Investigations for TI-Nspire™ Technology
Speakers: Brian Lannen and Jim Lowe
Level: Senior

So invest an hour with us on this webinar so we can help cut down your preparation time.
