Engaging Students in Contextual Writing for the AP® Statistics Exam

When: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 | 7 p.m. Central time
Technology: Non Technology Focused
Presenter: Robin Levine-Wissing, Tracy Watson

Let’s explore and discuss a Test Prep Reflection and Class Assessment Activity that has received positive feedback from students for years as they prepare to write free-responses.

These activities are appropriate for other AP® courses with free-response questions (FRQs) as well.

Using AP® Statistics exam questions, participants will engage in two activities that have the following student outcomes:

  • Gaining an understanding of writing expectations without using viewing a rubric
  • Gaining an understanding of the scoring of free-response questions
  • Working collaboratively to construct an answer to a free-response question
  • Analyzing classmates’ answers to free-response questions

In preparation for the webinar, please review FRQ 1 from this past AP® exam.

“This is my first year teaching AP Statistics, so I'm still getting used to grading the FRQs. This provided a lot of insight, and I will definitely have students talk through sample student responses.” — Dan Murphy, Episcopal High School (Texas)
