Solution 34884: Using the rand() Function on the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition Graphing Calculator

How can I use the rand() function on the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition?

The proper syntax for using the rand( function on the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition is listed below:

rand(number of trials)

NOTE: The rand( function returns a random number between 0 and 1 for the specified number of trials.

To generate 3 random numbers between 0 and 1, follow the steps provided below:

• From the main screen, press [MATH] and scroll right to select PROB menu.
• Select 1:rand and press [ENTER] (rand will be displayed on the main screen).
• Press [(] [3] [)] and [ENTER]
• The calculator will display the 3 randomly generated numbers

In order to view the entirety of the three generated numbers, use the arrow keys to scroll right.

To generate random numbers beyond the range of 0 to 1, users can include rand in an expression. For example, rand*5 generates a random number > 0 and < 5.

With each rand execution, the calculator generates the same random number sequence for a given seed value. The default seed value for rand is 0. To generate a different random-number sequence, store any nonzero seed value to rand. To restore the factory set seed value, store 0 to rand or reset the defaults.
