How do I enter and compute fraction problems on a TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, or TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode?

The TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, or TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode are not fraction calculators and do not have a specific fraction key. The TI-84 Plus family and TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode do have a template that allows fractions to be entered. On the TI-83 family use the division key [/].

Before beginning, ensure that you have the latest Operating System, by visiting the Software and OS Updates page.

For example, using the TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode, add 3 2/5 to 3/4 using the steps below:

• Press [ALPHA] [F1] [1]

• Enter in [3] and scroll
• Scroll down
• Enter in [4]
• Scroll to the right
• Press [+]
• Press [ALPHA] [F1] [2]
• Enter in [3]
• Scroll to the right
• Enter in [2]
• Scroll down
• Enter in [5]
• Press [ENTER]
• Depending on settings, below are two possible answers with MATHPRINT turned on and switching from n/d to Un/d.

Example: (5 8/13) / (9/23)

• Press [(] [5] [+] [8] [/] [1] [3] [)]
• Press [/]
• Press [(] [9] [/] [2] [3] [)]
• Press the [MATH] [1]
• Press the [ENTER]

NOTE: This may also be done on the TI-84 Plus and TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode. 

Changing a decimal into a fraction.

Example: Convert .4 into a fraction

• Press [.] [4] [MATH] [1] [ENTER]

Changing a fraction into a decimal.

Example: Convert 15/6 into a decimal

On the TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode:

• Press [MODE]
• Scroll up four times or scroll down ten times to get to ANSWERS
• Scroll to the right
• Press [ENTER] [2nd] [QUIT]
• Press [ALPHA] [F1] [1]
• Enter in [1] [5]
• Scroll down
• Press [6] [ENTER]

On either TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, or TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus:

• Press [1] [5] [/] [6] [ENTER]
