## Solution 11752: Finding Derivatives on the TI-83 Family, TI-84 Plus Family, or TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode.

### How can I calculate derivatives on a TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, or TI-Nspire Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode?

Please Note: The TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, and TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode can only calculate numeric derivatives.

For Example: Find the numeric derivative of f(x)=x² at x=2

Using MATHPRINT settings on the TI-84 Plus Family or TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus Mode:

Please Note: To use MATHPRINT mode you need the latest version of OS on your TI-84 Plus Family Calculator or TI-Nspire Handheld.

1) Press the [MATH] key.
2) Press [Down Arrow] until 8:nDeriv( is selected and press [ENTER].

3) Press [X,T,Theta,n] [X,T,Theta,n] [x²] [Right Arrow] [2] [ENTER].

On the TI-83 family or using CLASSIC settings on the TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode:

1) Press the [MATH] key.
2) Press [Down Arrow] until 8:nDeriv( is selected and press [ENTER].
3) Press [X,T,Theta,n] [x²] [,] [X,T,Theta,n] [,] [2] [)] [ENTER].

The TI-83 family, the TI-84 Plus family, and the TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode calculators do not have symbolic manipulation capabilities. They cannot find the symbolic derivative of a function. The following TI graphing calculators have the Computer Algebraic System (CAS) which allows them to perform symbolic derivatives: TI-89 Titanium, and the TI-Nspire CX CAS.
