Curve Ball Activity - Math and Science in Motion

Activity Overview

This activity serves as a follow-up to Activity 11 in the Explorations book, Math and Science in Motion: Activities for Middle School by Chris Brueningsen, Elisa Brueningsen, and Bill Bower (Texas Instruments Incorporated, 1997).

Before the Activity

If you are using the TI-Navigator System™ with the TI-73 you will need the attached .pdf file.
Students demonstrate their understanding of the vertex form of the quadratic function by manipulating plots of ball bounces. Have students complete Activity 11 from the EXPLORATIONS book first.

During the Activity

The attached LearningCheck™ appvar and resource files extend concepts from the activity above. These files can be sent to your class using TI-Navigator.

After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
