Using the Y= menu to teach Binomial Multiplication

Published on 04/02/2005

Activity Overview

Use the y= menu to mutiple binomials and give students instant feedback step by step.

The expression is entered as an equation in the y= menu and graphed. Each step is entered into the subsequent y= menu and visually checked for accuracy.

Before the Activity

Students should realize an expression set equal to y changes the expression into an equation.

Every equation has visual picture. For example: x=5 is a number line with a solid dot/point on the number 5.
***Students do not need to understand quadratics to do this activity.

During the Activity

The attached word document is the class notes for the activity.

Once the class goes through the notes, students can continue to complete exercises in their own text books checking with the graphing calculator along the way.

After the Activity

Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
