Linear Systems: Using Graphs and Tables

Activity Overview

Students learn to locate the real number solution of a system of linear equations (two equations and two variables) with the help of tables and graphs. They also learn to graphically illustrate the types of solutions expected for a system of linear equations.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 5) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 5-1 to 5-7 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Determine the number of solutions for a system of linear equations
  • In the activity System Match it!, use the knowledge of both functions and the graph and determine the correct answer
  • Gather information from a word problem and use induction to write a system of equations
  • Use the calculator to graph lines of a system of equations
  • Use the table to find the exact solution
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
