Activity Overview
In this activity, students investigate skip counting to complete patterns with fractions. They also develop skills to add fractions.
Before the Activity
- Access the NUMLINE application and select the Fraction Line option
- See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
- Print pages 41 - 43 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to the class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Set up the number line to Start at a fraction and set the Step value to a fraction
Observe the first few terms in the sequence on the number line
Change the Start value to zero and observe the new terms in the sequence
Repeat the activity with other Start and Step values
Observe that some patterns have mixed fractions and whole numbers
Use the NUMLINE application to complete patterns with mixed fractions as Step values
After the Activity
Students complete the Student Activity sheet.
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
