Vernier - Graphing Your Motion with EasyData™ App and CBR 2™

Activity Overview

Students will use a CBR 2™ motion detector to measure distance and velocity. Students prepare graphs of motion and analyze them. They compare and match graphs of distance versus time and velocity versus time.

Before the Activity

  • If you are using a TI-84 Plus connect the CBR 2™ Motion Detector using a Unit-to-CBR 2™ cable, the EasyData App will start automatically
  • If you are using a TI-83 Plus connect the CBR 2™ Motion Detector using Unit-to-Unit Cable and start the EasyData App
  • Position the Motion Detector on a table facing an area free of objects
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 11-13 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

  • Distribute the pages to your class
  • Mark distances of 1-m, 2-m, 3-m and 4-m from the Motion Detector on the floor
  • Starting with the 1-m position make students walk to different positions at varying speeds
  • Plot a graph of distance versus time
  • Examine a randomly generated graph and plan motion required to match it
  • Explore making velocity versus time graphs and compare them with distance versus time graphs
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Data Collection and Analysis Worksheet.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
