Linear Equations: Using Algebra

Activity Overview

Students learn to solve one-step and two-step linear equations. They understand algebraic concepts relating to linear equations such as isolating the variable, balancing equations, and checking solutions. Students also learn the properties of equality.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 2-10 to 2-15 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Solve linear equations to find the values of x and list the steps used
  • In the Solve It! activity identify steps to solve the given algebraic expression and find the solution
  • For each equation, in the Beam Dale Up activity, select the right answer from the four choices given
  • Read the equation as it moves down the calculator screen in the Free Fall activity and quickly solve for x
  • Use the calculator to test the solution
  • Solve additional linear equations
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
