Swing Thing Activity - Math and Science in Motion

Activity Overview

This activity serves as a follow-up to Activity 10 in the Explorations book, Math and Science in Motion: Activities for Middle School by Chris Brueningsen, Elisa Brueningsen, and Bill Bower (Texas Instruments Incorporated, 1997).

Before the Activity

In this activity, students demonstrate their understanding of the pendulum experiment. They explore how changes in can mass, string length, and Pull Back distance affect the period and amplitude of the pendulum's plot. Have students complete Activity 10 from the EXPLORATIONS book first.

During the Activity

The attached LearningCheck(TM) appvar extends concepts from the activity above. This LearningCheck appvar can be sent to your class using TI-Navigator.

After the Activity

Review student answers:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
