Linear Equations: Using Graphs and Tables

Activity Overview

Students learn to locate the real number solution of a linear equation using tables. They also learn to locate the real number solution of a linear equation using graphical method on a Cartesian (x-y) graph.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect&trade, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 2-1 to 2-5 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Use a table and a number line to find the solution to a linear equation
  • Solve linear equations and pick the right answer from the given four options
  • Use the table of values of equations and answer the questions
  • Use the table feature on the calculator to find the solution to the question
  • Estimate the solution to the given equation and record it
  • Use the calculator and find the solution to the equation
  • Use the graphing feature to graph the two equations
  • Determine the point of intersection, and find the solution
  • Record the answer and explain the solution
  • Solve more problems using tables and graphs
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
