The King's Chessboard

Activity Overview

Students explore different plans for a reward related to the children's story "The King's Chessboard" to explore exponential functions and their graphs. The activity can be used with or without the TI-Navigator™ and using the TI-73 Explorer™ or TI-84 graphing calculators.

Before the Activity

Students must be familiar with entering lists and equations into the calculator and plotting and graphing.

During the Activity

Students will use small sets of data to explore the plots and then use the basic form of the exponential equation to fit the graph and then go back and use sequence commends, equations, and sum commands to complete the activity.

After the Activity

Class discussion about the differences between linear and exponenetial and what type of changes in an exponential equation are needed to move the graph to fit the "plotted data."
