NCTE: All Mixed Up

Activity Overview

After unscrambling a sentence mixed up by the teacher, students will create their own scrambled sentences and share them with their fellow students.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the NoteFolio(tm) App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Using the overhead projector, present to the students a mixed-up sentence. Give them five to ten minutes to unscramble the words.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity

  • Students will:
  • Understand the form and function of words, phrases, and clauses, including inter-related clauses in complex sentences, and use them effectively.
  • Use correct tenses, including conditionals, to indicate the relative order and relationship of events.
  • Employ principles of agreement, including subject-verb, pronoun-noun, and preposition-pronoun.
  • Punctuate compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences correctly, including appropriate use of dialogue, citations, colons, hyphens, dashes, ellipses, and italics.
  • Employ the conventions of capitalization.
  • Spell frequently used words correctly and use effective strategies for spelling unfamiliar words.
  • Recognize common errors in the use of language and know how (and when) to correct them.
  • After the Activity

Now that students have created scrambled sentences, it is time to share them. Ask students to trade devices with a classmate. Remind students that they may help their classmates. Here are two suggestions for hints that can be used:

  • Give your classmate the first word, the last word, or both words.
  • Suggest that your classmate find pairs of words that sound correct together.
