Parent Graphs

Activity Overview

Students will learn the shapes and names of 8 parent graphs.

Before the Activity

Students should have access to TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus

During the Activity

Define parent graphs and what is meant by a family of graphs. Give students the handout on the 8 basic parent graphs to study.
These include the identity function, constant function, absolute value, greatest integer, polynomials (quadratic and cubic), square root, and rational function.

After the Activity

After students have had sufficient time to study, give the quiz on identifying parent graphs.
