NCSS: Assessing Populist Era?s Monetary Policy

Activity Overview

Student knowledge and understanding of the regional considerations of monetary policy and the political party response to those differences are assessed. Also assessed is their understanding of basic inflationary and deflationary economics.

Before the Activity

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the StudyCards(tm) App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Conduct a class review session using the Teacher Notes in this activity. Remind the students to review their vocabulary and their notes.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the StudyCards(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity


  • Students will:
  • Evaluate the effect of inflation and deflation on selected groups.
  • Use data from the graphs to explain how and why farmers and laborers differed on monetary policy.
  • Detail the divergent thinking on the issue of monetary policy.
  • Compare/contrast the goals of the three political parties related to monetary policy.
  • After the Activity
