Activity Overview
After defining denotation and connotation, students will identify possible connotations of various provided terms. They will explain both positive and negative connotations for these terms, explaining why and for whom these connotations might exist.

Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class

Students will:
Identify denotative and connotative meanings.
Examine possible effects of connotative meanings on an audience.
Analyze an image to determine connotative meanings.
Describe audiences that would recognize these connotations.
Identify and analyze connotative meanings of various terms depending on context.
Define connotation and denotation (with examples).
After the Activity
Discuss possible connotations of the terms in the assessment activity. Discuss definitions of denotation and connotation. Ask students to share their paragraphs aloud and discuss their responses. Answer any questions concerning connotation.
