Vernier - A Good Cold Pack

Activity Overview

Students use the EasyTemp temperature probe to determine temperature changes as different solid substances dissolve in water. They then develop and test a plan for making the best cold pack using three grams of one of the substances. EasyData™ is needed for this activity.

Key Steps

Students use a Temperature Probe inserted into a solution of 3 g of one of the test substances dissolved in room temperature water. Students monitor the temperature and collect data until the temperature readings stop changing and repeat the process for all test substances.
Students then make and test a plan for making the coldest temperature using one of the solid substances and the best amount of water to create the Best Cold-Pack Mixture.
