Activity Overview

Students construct a model of a house, drawing pictures of the people and pets in the house. Students use skip counting strategies to find possible combinations of people and pets that live in their classmates houses with the help of pictures and TI-10.

Before the Activity

  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
    Activity A:

  • Read The Napping House book and discuss how many feet are in the bed


  • Activity B:
  • Fold paper to model a house
  • Draw pictures of people and pets in the house
  • Find the total number of feet in the house


  • Activity C:
  • Develop skip counting patterns for people and pets
  • Observe the pattern formed


  • Activity D:
  • Display a house with certain number of feet inside
  • Explore different combinations of who or what may live inside the house
  • Use the calculator to check the answer
  • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
