NCTE: Assessing Elements of Punctuation

Activity Overview

Students will answer questions about punctuation. They will fill in blanks, choose correct multiple choice answers, or determine if a statement is true or false. They will write brief explanations for each or offer an example to support their choice.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the LearningCheck™ App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Explain to students that the quiz they will be taking contains the questions they wrote, but may reflect minor changes for clarity or to eliminate redundancies. Explain that the quiz will be evaluated on the accuracy of the fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, or true/false answer, and on the accuracy and clarity of the explanation or example they provide for each question in the text block provided.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck and NoteFolio™ file(s) to your class using TI Connect™ and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity

  • Students will:
  • Be able to succinctly define and use various types of punctuation.
  • Utilize research skills and synthesis skills to determine definitions.
  • Demonstrate understanding of uses of various forms of punctuation.
  • Synthesize their collective knowledge of punctuation and apply it to their creation of quiz questions.
  • Demonstrate understanding of punctuation terms and uses.
  • After the Activity

LearningCheck Creator automatically grades quizzes as they are returned; hence, you will be able to provide immediate feedback on that portion of the quiz. You will complete the other half of the assessment by averaging the two types of evaluations to determine student comprehension.
