Classifying Even and Odd Functions

Published on 06/09/2008

Activity Overview

In this activity, students are asked to classify functions as even, odd, or neither based on the graph of the function.

Before the Activity

If you are using the TI-Navigator System with the TI-73 you will need the attached .pdf file.
Students should understand the relationship between the symmetry of the graph and the function type (even, odd, or neither).

Make copies of the student handout before hand. You will also need to download the EDC files to use. Have them ready to send to your students' calculators.

During the Activity

Have students go through the handout as individuals or in small groups.

Have students answer the questions in the following LearningCheck™ activity by referring to the graph of each function.

After the Activity

Review answers with students to check for understanding. This activity is ideal as an introduction/connection to the algebraic definitions of even and odd functions.
