Rational Numbers

Activity Overview

Students review the definition of rational numbers as ratios and as terminating and repeating decimals. They also examine the reciprocal property of rational numbers and operations with rational numbers.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1-11 to 1-17 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Convert a mixed fraction to an improper fraction
  • Convert fractions into decimals
  • Convert decimals and fractions into percentages
  • Line up fractions (horizontally or vertically) to add up to 1
  • Play a game where missing numbers are entered, and write each number sentence and solution on the worksheet
  • Solve problems of multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting fractions
  • After the Activity

    Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
