Activity Overview
Students will draw a model of a Punnett Square on the calculator and discover all possible combinations of Genotypes. They explore theoretical and experimental probabilities. They also collect data through experimental probability and use the laws of heredity.
Before the Activity
Install the TI Connect™ or TI-GRAPH LINK™ software on the calculator using the TI Connectivity cable and the unit-to-unit link cable
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 51 - 58 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to your class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Draw four 2 by 2 Punnett Squares on the calculator, including a pure dominant, a pure recessive, a pure hybrid, and a
Label the models and save the drawings
Use the coin-toss function to simulate the birth of 40 offsprings to a pair of pure hybrid parents
Record this data and the frequencies on the Data Sheet
Generate a circle graph to compare the probabilities of each gene combination and turn in the data by creating lists
Plot the graph of genotype distribution
Compare experimental probability with theoritical probability
After the Activity
Students will fill in the Data Collection and Analysis Sheet and answer the questions listed on it.
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
