Activity Overview

Students will explore the impact of monetary policy on two types of workers: farmers and laborers. Half the class examines how inflation and deflation affects the economic well-being of farmers while the other half examines the impact to laborers.

Before the Activity

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the CellSheet(tm) and StudyCards(tm) Apps on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Begin by reviewing the vocabulary in the StudyCards(tm) Application and the Application Variable (AppVar) titled EconDef to insure that all students understand the basic concepts. The teacher may wish to create an AppVar that includes all the vocabulary for the unit and use the review activity as a daily part of instruction.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the CellSheet(tm) and StudyCards(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity


  • Students will:
  • Evaluate the effect of inflation and deflation on selected groups.
  • Use data from the graphs to explain how and why farmers and laborers differed on monetary policy.
  • Detail the divergent thinking on the issue of monetary policy.
  • Compare/contrast the goals of the three political parties related to monetary policy.
  • After the Activity

    Lead a class discussion using the debriefing sheet as a guide. Inform the students in the next activity they will decide how to effect change through political parties.
