Canadian Life Expectancy

Activity Overview

In this activity, students analyze statistical data using the calculator and the TI-InterActive!™ software. They perform regression on the data to find the life expectancy of people in Canada.

Before the Activity

  • Download the TI Connect™ software to transfer data from the computer to the calculator
  • Link the TI Connect to the calculator
  • Install the TI InterActive! on the computer
  • Print pages 1 - 3 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the printed pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Download a Canadian Life Expectancy data table into the TI-InterActive!'s data editor
  • Name the lists and copy the list tables into a document
  • Export the data from the computer to the calculator
  • Plot a graph of life expectancy versus years [on the calculator or on TI-InterActive!]
  • Perform a linear regression [on the calculator or on TI-InterActive!] and find a line of best fit for the average life expectancy for males and for females
  • Use the graph editor to include the best fit line on the graph
  • Based on the regression line, determine the year in which the Canadian Life Expectancy will be 100
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
