CWF: Life as a Colonial Slave

Activity Overview

Students use the LearningCheck(tm) Application to analyze a series of primary source documents to reveal details about the culture and daily life of 18th-century slaves.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the LearningCheck (tm) App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity


  • Students will:
  • Provide information on the characteristics of African-Americans' living conditions, daily routines, and material culture.
  • Make inferences about a slave's living conditions, including family life, work conditions, daily routines, and material culture.
  • Read and interpret eighteenth-century documents, and provide answers to questions related to these resources.
  • Respond to "Documents-Based Questions," utilizing the primary sources provided.
  • After the Activity

    EVALUATION: Using their answers to the Scaffolding Questions and their knowledge of American history, have students respond to the following question. All student answers should be written in essay form and make use of information obtained from at least three of the primary source documents.
