Linear Inequalities: Using Graphs and Tables

Activity Overview

Students learn to estimate the solution set, in real numbers, of a linear inequality using graphical methods on a number line and on a Cartesian (x-y) graph. They also learn how to solve inequalities using tables.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 4-1 to 4-5 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Draw the number line graph for each inequality
  • In the activity Build the Solution Set!, select the correct solution for x from the four options given
  • Use the number line to estimate the solution set of the given inequalities
  • Use the table of the expression to estimate the solution for the inequality and then use number sense to determine the exact answer
  • Find the solution of inequalities using x-y graphs
  • Solve additional problems
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
