Vernier - Mapping the Ocean Floor

Activity Overview

In this lesson, students will use a motion detector to map objects on a simulated ocean floor.

Objectives

  • Students will use a Motion Detector to measure distances.
  • Students will map simulated ocean floors.

About the Lesson

In this experiment, students will investigate objects below the surface of a body of water.

As a result students will:

  • Develop an understanding of how a signal is sent out and bounces back to calculate the depth of the object.
  • Map the ocean floor by sending out a series of "pings" in a grid pattern and recording the depths.
