Adding Up The Operations

Activity Overview

In this activity, students use the order of operations and number properties to create a unique expression from a set of numbers that must equal another number. Then they will place parenthesis in a number statement to make it true. Students will also identify properties commonly used evaluating expressions.

Key Steps

In the second part of the activity, students will determine what integer they need to subtract from a number sentence to get a value of zero. In the third part of the activity, students will work backwards to write one addition and one subtraction number sentence that equals a given number.
